Description
The sleek Fiberfab Bonito was undoubtedly inspired by the legendary Ford GT40 of the 1960s. Its shape bears a striking resemblance to the GT40, incorporating various design elements borrowed from that iconic car.
While the Bonito was originally designed to be powered by a VW Beetle engine, this particular example is fitted—and legally registered—with a fine 1.6-liter VW Passat engine delivering a spirited 75 hp. This setup allows the lightweight vehicle (weighing just 945 kg dry) to fly along country roads—an absolute joy to drive!
The car we are offering on behalf of the owner is built on a VW chassis first registered on December 13, 1968. A fiberglass body manufactured by Fiberfab was mounted onto this platform, and the Volkswagen floor pan has undergone extensive refurbishment.
Over the years, the rear section was modified to better match the look of the Ford GT40, including the addition of round taillights.
Furthermore, a previous owner engineered a mechanism allowing the side windows to be opened and closed via a crank—a feature not typically found on the Bonito.
A plaque laminated into the bodywork indicates that this is the tenth body ever produced.
According to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), approximately 100 Bonitos remained in Germany in 2017—about 10% of total production—with roughly half of them registered for road use. This makes our Bonito a true rarity!
