Description
On March 17, 1949, the Mercedes-Benz branch in Cologne received the chassis—fitted with a partial body—of the "170" model offered here on consignment.
The vehicle was subsequently converted into a station wagon and outfitted as an ambulance by the firm Lueg in Bochum. There are no records indicating who operated the vehicle or for how long it remained in service.
A long-serving employee of the Mercedes Classic Center in Hamburg discovered the car—which was in need of restoration—online in late 2000 and acquired it for the Center. At that time, the Mercedes was largely complete but not roadworthy and was painted yellow.
It was decided to launch a project involving the car as part of the training program for young mechanics, overseen by three master technicians. Over the course of several years, the vehicle was rebuilt in-house with great care and dedication. The decision was quickly made to create a period-correct Mercedes service vehicle, similar to the one on display at the factory museum.
Certain specialized tasks were outsourced at the time. The coachbuilding work was even featured in an article in the classic car magazine *MARKT* (April 2003 issue).
The engine was overhauled by the legendary Rolf Lepstück in Stade; over the years, the chronicler has been able to personally attest to the quality of this work during numerous drives.
The upholstery work was entrusted to the skilled hands of the Weinhold workshop.
Immediately after its completion in 2015, the 170 V served as a support vehicle—accompanied by two Classic Center staff members providing technical assistance—at the German "Pagoda" (SL) meet in Hamburg. Around 160 Mercedes SL models participated in the event, and the 170 V’s maiden voyage was a resounding success.
The light-colored lettering on the station wagon is merely a decal and can be easily removed. In recent years, the Classic Center has frequently used the "170" as a goodwill ambassador and promotional vehicle, allowing it to gain considerable recognition in and around Hamburg.
The condition of the estate remains truly excellent. Its power delivery—from a spirited 38 hp—is absolutely astonishing; it handles city traffic with ease.
This 170 V estate is almost certainly the finest example of its kind currently on the market.
