Description
This very late Mercedes 220 Cabrio A is already one of the sought-after models with the slightly curved windshield. In total, only 123 examples of the 220 Cabrio A were produced in 1955; in April 1955 there were only exactly 18 units.
According to the data card (which is very difficult to read), our 220 was sent to Hamburg in April 1955. The first cardboard cover letter was lost, but because of this loss a new vehicle title was issued on May 29, 1963. The first known holder was the company D. & H. Holzimport - from Hamburg!
We tend to suspect that these could also be the original owners. Probably because of the planned sale and the associated deregistration or re-registration, the vehicle registration document may have been needed and searched for, but not found. A new registration document had to be requested.
The registration to D. & H. Holzimport took place on May 29, 1963. The transfer to the next owner took place on July 24, 1963. The buyer was Siegfried B. from Hameln. He used his stylish convertible for 18 years before it was temporarily shut down on September 24, 1981.
The 220 was able to take a breather for around twenty years - in a barn near Hamelin.
The next owner, Ulrich L. from Bad Münder, continued to store the Mercedes in the barn, but made no attempts to revive the convertible or even obtain registration.
The fourth owner, Baron von K., insisted on bringing the Sleeping Beauty out of her long sleep in 2001. However, he probably bought the 220 in 1990. It was said that from 2001 onwards, Mr. K. carried out the restoration on behalf of the fifth owner, which we can still admire today.
It took around ten years to rebuild. To our great joy, various photos have been preserved that show the restoration process. The restorer
placed great value on preserving as much of the original substance as possible. Of course, missing parts had to be replaced and a lot of money and effort was invested in making the elegant car shine again.
As part of the restoration, parts of the wooden substructure and the sheet metal were replaced, but the leather and parts of the extensive chrome trim were not. The chrome is therefore partly wonderfully patinated. The original leather is still in the interior of the convertible to this day. The paint layer measurement on the bonnet suggests that the bonnet could still be in its first coat of paint - at least that's what is reported...
The client never registered the 220, but only put it back into storage.
So the current owner, on whose behalf we are now offering the convertible, could very well be only the third owner of this almost 70-year-old Mercedes convertible!
