Description
In the 1960s and 1970s, it was very unusual in Asia to import a new left-hand drive Mercedes car from Germany.
This Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 Coupé we offer is such a rare piece. It was delivered new in Japan.
In 2015, a renowned British classic car dealer discovered this coupe in Japan and imported it to Wales. The car was discovered and purchased there by a Mercedes Classic partner from Hamburg.
The good substance of this coupé convinced the dealer from Hamburg to commission a complete restoration. The restorer was extremely pleased to uncover such good substance in this case, which is rarely found.
As part of the refurbishment, the coupé was completely (!!) dismantled. So the decision was quickly made to change the delivery paintwork from white 717 to black 040.
In our opinion, the decision to repaint was absolutely right. Since the car was not only completely dismantled, but also completely stripped of paint, you can of course no longer see any traces of the original color. Even the color plaque on the lock plate has been adjusted.
The restoration is documented by various photos.
The good condition of the coupé did not pose a major challenge for the restoration company commissioned and so all of the sheet metal parts were preserved. The engine currently installed is still the one that was installed at the factory in 1970.
All electrical helpers such as the window regulators or the antenna work perfectly, and the air conditioning also cools as it should.
Our in-house photographers Niklas and Daniel are already pretty cool with our usual inventory and are no longer enthusiastic about really special oldies. In the case of our coupé, however, things were completely different. The two of them were hard to get out of the car and would have liked to photograph many more of the absolutely enchanting details on this 111 if we had only given them the time.
These beautiful cars make excellent travel cars. Reliable, fast and comfortable. With the side windows rolled down, they almost feel like a convertible.
In our eyes it's simply a dream car! Today, a restoration would likely cost significantly more than the price we are asking for this coupe. Hardly anyone is willing to invest such sums when refurbishing a convertible costs the same amount of money but is ultimately worth much more...
The mileage indicated corresponds to the kilometers that the owner has driven with the coupe since the restoration. The actual kilometers driven are not known.
