Description
In October 1969, many Americans were probably still in a state of joy after the successful moon landing in July '69. Fittingly, number 1 in the US charts at the time was “In the year 2525” by Zager & Evans.
Against this trend of believing in the new, the glorious future that lies ahead of the Americans, Bruce A. from Newport Beach, California, drove the Mercedes 280 SE offered here in October, which was already classic at the time and almost antiquated in appearance from your trusted dealer.
The Americans were not exactly spoiled by the outstanding quality of materials and workmanship with the local automobile products. A Mercedes W111 with such outstanding workmanship is welcome to keep up with current fashion.
It's just unfortunate that this high-quality production in Stuttgart, coupled with an excellent selection of materials, raised the purchase price well above average in 1969. The Mercedes 111 convertibles never fell in price to the sad lowlands of an everyday /8 or a fintail, as long as they were well cared for.
We are now pleased to be able to offer such a convertible on behalf of a customer from Hamburg. It is one of the rare 280 SE flat cooler convertibles with the tried and tested 6 cylinder engine. The car has obviously been loved and cared for throughout its life, but in our opinion it has never been restored.
The current owner took over a fully drivable, attractive car around four years ago. But as a good customer, he always had all the work carried out by Gunnar Hahn's renowned specialist company north of Hamburg.
In addition, the Weinhold company in Hamburg made and installed a new set of carpets and reupholstered the top - including the headliner, lining and painting of the frame! The invoice for this work (from March 2019) amounts to around EUR 12,000.
In January 2020, as part of a very extensive maintenance with various small repairs, the wood was also reworked from the best address. This invoice amounts to EUR 10,600.
The last inspection, also associated with some smaller repair work, was carried out in May 2021 at a cost of EUR 3,500.
There is absolutely no maintenance backlog.
Before the 280 came to Hamburg, it was driven by Piet S. from Zevenhuizen in the Netherlands. We also have some documents from his time that show how the beautiful convertible was cared for.
Even from the USA there is still some evidence that confirms that the respective owner really appreciated the 111. At 81,016 miles in 1996, the car took part in a beauty contest - and was awarded an excellent 386 out of 430 possible points.
The bottom line is a wonderful Mercedes convertible with an extremely attractive color scheme and all the important equipment details. The smell of the original leather in the interior is simply to die for.
