Description
Between 1936 and 1939, 727 examples of the magnificent Rolls-Royce Phantom III were built. We are pleased to offer this 1938 Phantom III on behalf of the owner, who has owned it for many years.
This chassis, number 3DL88, was used for its first test drives at the Rolls-Royce factory in Derby on August 11, 1938. It was still without a body.
On August 15, 1938, the chassis was delivered to H.J. Mulliner Ltd. for construction of the body. The design number is 6194, and the body number is 4595. Even then, the color scheme was dark green with black and light brown leather.
The chassis was commissioned by the dealer John Croal & Sons of Edinburgh, Scotland, who actually owned the H.J. Mulliner coachwork company at the time. From October 13 to 22, 1938, our Phantom III was at the Earls Court Show in London (stand 94).
There, the car won the bronze medal for its fantastic bodywork! This Rolls-Royce was extensively reviewed in the show catalog and the British magazine "The Autocar."
The quality of H.J. Mulliner's work was so high that Rolls-Royce acquired the business in 1959.
After the show, the major Rolls-Royce dealer Jack Barclay from London acquired the car and sold it on December 17, 1938, to Sidney E. Parkes for what was then a staggering sum of GBP 3,008. This Mr. Parkes used the Phantom until 1952.
We have a photo of the original drawing from the coachbuilder and a photo of the new car from Jack Barclay LTD, as well as copies of the new car invoice.
In 1987, our car was extensively restored and still presents itself in beautiful condition today!
The car has been used for numerous tours over the past few years and has proven to be extremely reliable. The last visit to a reputable specialist workshop was in June 2025. Among other things, the tires and the MOT were renewed.
The countless features are simply breathtaking... there are so many extras to discover in this luxury car that it's a true joy:
A bar with two bottles, eight small cups (with the engraved chassis number!), whitewall tires (replaced in June 2025), an electric partition, an intercom for giving the driver instructions, opening rear side windows, folding additional seats in the rear, retractable, tinted side windows, a horn with two volumes, an integrated jack, reading lights, onboard tool kit, etc., etc.
The attention to detail thrilled us – and kept us busy for a long time.
The Phantom III is the last model still bearing the signature of Henry Royce. Of the 727 Phantom IIIs completed, approximately 650 are estimated to have survived to this day, which underscores the significance of this model. The successor model is significantly rarer, with only 18 Phantom IVs built, of which 16 are currently known.
A nearly identical Phantom III is known as "Phoebe the Phantom" in faraway Australia.
In 1987 our Phantom won first prize at the "1987 Federal Concourse d`Elegance"!
